Review: Nyko Perfect Shot for the Wii

jan8_0002Buying a controller shell for the Wii, especially a gun themed one, is harder than buying a real gun and a bottle of wine at the same time. You have to do your research, compare notes, shop around, read testimonies from owners and put some virtual rounds down-range. Hopefully, the price is right, the texture and quality is there and you don’t get a sour taste in your mouth from spending your hard-earned cash on a hunk of plastic!

If you take your lightgun games as seriously as I do, you want a good quality piece of hardware that will add to the experience, not frustrate the hell out of you.

Just to be clear, there are two types of lightgun games on the Wii: Those suited for longarms and those suited for pistols and/or longarms (a longarm being a Wii Zapper or equivalent). Looking for a pistol to enhance Ghost Squad, Umbrella Chronicles, Duck Hunt or Wii Play that doesn’t suck? I may have the answer you seek…..

Despite the fact that there are only a handful of true lightgun games on the Wii, every manufacturer involved with making peripherals on the Wii is determined to flood the market with gun shells. Companies like Icon, Intec, CTA Digital, PEGA, Blazepro, Hais, etc. all have their offerings, some better than others. Forget all that crap, the only pistol shell you need is the Nyko Perfect Shot.

For the review, I put the Perfect Shot through its paces playing Ghost Squad, a great lightgun game ported from the arcade that’s fast, intense and demands accuracy. So without further ado, let’s get right down to business:

Pros

  • Very affordable at only $14.99 / £14.99.
  • Good quality construction and well balanced even with the Wii Remote added.
  • Spring loaded trigger for faster follow-up shots
  • Nunchuk jack under the handle to suit multiple control styles
  • The size of the handle and it’s weight are appropriate for gamers with small or large hands.

Cons

  • No front site takes a little getting used to.
  • Removal of the wrist strap from the Wii remote is mandatory before attachment.

While I wouldn’t consider it a “con” per se, it’s a shame that games using the A button for firing can’t really use this. If you’ve seen previews of the Pelican Duo Shot, it appears that they’ve overcome that hurdle as well. Unfortunately, they keep delaying the Duo Shot’s release over and over again. At this point I have to wonder if it’ll ever come out at all.

So overall, I’d recommend this as the best controller shell for pistol-friendly lightgun games available on the Wii. Expect a review of a good Wii Zapper alternative for those longarm friendly games in the future.

This is my preferred shell. Out of all of the shells released, including the under par Zapper, this is the most comfortable. By far.
