Review: Memory, Sorrow and Thorn – To Green Angel Tower Part 2 by Tad Williams
A decent, solid, fantasy novel and the conclusion to the Memory, Sorrow and Thorn series, this one clocks in at nearly 800 pages. I guess that’s a bit too big for my tastes as I found my interest waning as I read it even as the story came to a head and wrapped itself up.
The lack of consistency at times was disappointing and the main character never quite blossomed into the hero I was hoping for. Instead, he remained very much the same person as he was in the beginning of the story despite the incredible adventures and things he had seen and experienced. It always saddens me when I take to a character to ultimately find him or her underutilized or just plain forgettable. Still, the story was interesting and it’s conclusion, while somewhat predictable, was satisfying as it concluded the series and tied off the loose ends.
At the end of the series, I’m glad I finished it but I doubt I’ll read it again. I’m just not into these super huge novels as I lose interest around 300-400 pages or so. Too much minor detail perhaps? Slow pace due to the practically minute by minute description of events? Maybe both? I don’t know. Either way I won’t recommend this series unless your into that style of writing which unfortunately I am not.
