Review: Forgotten Realms – Murder in Cormyr by Chet Williams
Another solid entry in the D&D murder mystery series, this one takes place in a small town called Ghars on the fringe of Cormyr near the Sembia border. Two murders take place within a short span of time and it’s up to a retired War Wizard and his indentured servant to solve it.
Now I have to admit that I’m not a murder mystery fan by any means. Nevertheless it’s an interesting enough story and because it’s high fantasy, nearly unpredictable because of the wealth of possibilities that exist. The story is told by the servant Jasper who fancies himself a bit of an amateur detective though he has no idea what he has gotten himself into. Not a particularly likeable character as he’s just an untrained peasant from a small town. There’s no epic story here or grand destiny, just a laid back, small town story. While I did finish it and was satisfied with doing so, it’s far from the best Forgotten Realms novel I’ve read.
All in all a decent novel despite my mild disappointment with the main character. The characters are written well and the story has a good pace. Just don’t expect a lot of sword & sorcery from it.
